Asana, Pranayama & Teaching Techniques

50 Hours

The study of Yogasana will make up the majority of this module, you’ll delve into the many poses, their alignment, benefits & the contraindications

We’ll explore the principles & practice of Hatha Yoga, including Sun Salutations & Vinyasa Flow.

We’ll investigate the rise in popularity of Yin Yoga & Yoga Nidra, as well as looking at the lineages, their benefits, histories & recent problems.

We’ll look at meditation & utlise creative but simple visualisations for use in class.

Uncomplicated pranayama & breath ratios for use in classes will be taught & we’ll study sound & mantra, looking at their uses during asana practice & on their own.

We will consider the importance of relaxation techniques in our busy lives & the various tools that can be used for initiating the relaxation response.

The elements of a Yoga Class (warm-up, main practice, relaxation) will be combined as you start planning your 6 week beginners course, with consideration given to class aims & student outcomes.

Teaching Skills

50 Hours

Your teaching skills & communications will be what define you as a teacher; you will become confident in the principles of preparation, class-planning & theming.

Ample time will be given to teaching yoga as appropriate to individual/group. We will consider the skill of reading the room & your languaging skills will be developed.

Sanskrit names for poses & their more colourful modern names will be explored, as will the use of music, setting the scene & adding your personal touches to your classes.

You will be encouraged to look at your own relationships with teachers & define your own understanding of healthy student-teacher boundaries.

Insurance, ParQ, Affiliations & Licences.

The responsibilities of being a yoga teacher & self-reflection on how we take care of ourselves will arise from encouraging others in self-care practices.

The Business of Yoga will include looking at gym teaching versus studio versus peripatetic teaching. Knowing your financial worth & respecting the people you work alongside will all be investigated.

History & Philosophy

30 Hours

You will come to understand the importance & influence of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras on modern day yoga. Patanjali’s guidance on how to gain mastery over the mind & emotions & his advice on spiritual growth will be studied. This will give rise to discussions on right-living & how we live the sutras on & off the mat.

We will look at the Hatha Yoga Pradipika & the classical practices of Hatha Yoga as they pertain to contemporary classes. The HYP's recommendations on how to prepare the body & nervous system, for stillness & creating the necessary physical strength required for practices that calm the mind will be studied.

Yoga & the religious experience will be explored, we’ll look at Hinduism & the Bhagavad Gita & the concept of Yoga being in religion, but Religion not being in Yoga.

You’ll have access to 20 hours of vigorously refined material, led by David Keil, an internationally recognised subject-matter expert, incorporating yoga, anatomy, physiology, kinesiology & physical exploration.

Practicum

20 Hours

Application & practicum will allow you to apply what you have learned & practiced in a wider context. You will teach a beginner’s course, at the studio to real people (if you wish, or elsewhere), some of which will be observed or recorded for your final submission.

The practicum element of the course enables you to put into action the knowledge you have gained & get direct feedback on client work. It is designed to enable students to pave the way to becoming skilled yoga teachers.

Attending yoga classes outside of the teacher training with the following stipulations:
